I have no fruit so please go away
You can always tell when the genetics labs have started up for the semester: errant fruit flies tormenting me at my desk. How do they get here, anyway? The genetics lab is on the 3rd floor of a building separated from this one by about 50 feet. They must ride on people's clothes when they go from genetics lab to their orgo lab.

Despite doing genetics for a living, I've never actually done a fruit fly lab. I did however do a "fast plants" Arabidopsis lab, which is much more relevant anyway. Plus, Arabidopsis doesn't flee its pot and flutter around my face while I'm trying to work.

Brings back a memory when I was on summer break and need a summer job. I was too far away but I drove to UCDavis to see what they had available. I had an interview regarding fruit fly genetics. Apparently they were running radiation tests on flies and wanted to see how soon the flies recovered from small amounts of radiation damage in their progeny. At least that's what it sounded like. All I'd have to do is keep the larval stages fed and help sort the hatchlings by some phenotype markers.

While the interview was going on, flies were swirling around the office. It was funny. I was raising wingless fruitflies at my apartment, which were meant to be food for my Siamese Fighting fish. They wanted a person to come on call on short notice. I was just too far away at the time and already on call for another job.
